Russia's last great Imperial celebration was the lavish ball of 1913 at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, crowning 300 years of Romanov rule. The finest gowns, jewels, snuff boxes, and banqueting tableware were displayed then for the last time, before the outbreak of World War I and then the Bolshevik Revolution brought such opulence to an end. Yet since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russians have been eager to repatriate their lost heritage, with everyone from the Hermitage Museum to bargain hunters at Paris flea markets snapping up pre-Revolutionary porcelain, glass, silver, Tula work, jewelry, Fabergé items, lapidary, and walrus ivory. Illustrated with more than 300 color photos, this catalogue describes exquisite objects and artworks, and their makers, as far back as the 16th century.
