The quest for beauty is an age-old idea - so much so that it can't really be dated. People of different eras have all represented their own means of chasing beauty. Viewing the pictures in the Pirelli Calendar, we often find ourselves in the presence of concepts such as Beauty or Sensuality, Femininity and even Fashion. As we try to understand just how these concepts have been portrayed over time by so many supremely talented photographers, we realise that the photographic medium is, in and of itself, the main shared premise; the fact that these concepts become a result of their time by means of photography.
The images of the Pirelli Calendar showcase not only the poetics of its individual authors, but a cross-section of the society, aesthetics and arts between the 20th and 21st centuries, as well.
The aim of this book is to cast light on women and the evolution of how they have been portrayed from the Sixties to the present.
To this end, The Cal is an impressive tool; with no restrictions set by their customers, the authors were able to give free rein to their creativity, thus expressing not only their own vision, but also the more general vision of their time.
